SOVEREIGN GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH
Of Princeton, New Jersey
Matthew 6:22: The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23: But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! 24: No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

The treasure of one's heart will consume his or her life without premeditation. It is a natural thing. That which we love and cherish is that which occupies our thoughts and actions to the satisfaction of our desires.
WHAT ABOUT DEMAS?
Pastor Henry Mahan
I believe I know a little of the grief that Paul felt when he wrote, "Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world." I don't know very much about Demas, but I know that Paul believed that Demas loved Christ, loved the Gospel, and would continue in the faith of Christ until God called him home. But Demas allowed someone or something to come between him and the Lord, revealing that what he had professed for so long was ONLY a profession!
Perhaps Demas had a common, ordinary job and was promoted to a position of authority, which made his association with the despised Gospel and Apostles embarrassing to him; or perhaps Demas was a widower who met a certain unbelieving, attractive woman, and she turned his foolish head from the church and the Gospel; or perhaps Demas came into a great inheritance and his new life-style did not fit the humble life-style of the apostles; or perhaps Demas was a young, handsome man who despised the single life and was determined to marry HIS CHOICE over the protest of the Apostle Paul; or perhaps Demas was an ambitious preacher who felt that toning down the offensive message of free-grace and seeking the approval of Arminians and the fellowship of religionist would open doors for him, increase his congregation, and add to his support; or perhaps Demas had just never stopped loving Demas and his claims to Christ were only a part of his effort to promote himself.
BEWARE OF RELIGIOUS LEAVEN
Jim Byrd is pastor of First Baptist Church in Almont, Michigan.
"Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees" (Matthew 16:6). I readily admit I am no baker. However, I do know that for bread to rise, leaven (yeast) must be added to the dough. When a baker prepares his bread, he doesn't bake leaven alone, for none would eat it; his finished product would be without the delicious taste of grain. Leaven, therefore, must be added to the flour in a skillful way, so as not to overshadow the flavor of the bread. The only way that men will consume the leaven is if it is wisely mixed with grain.
When our Lord referred to "the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees," He was speaking of their doctrine. This is clearly stated in verses 11-12 of the same chapter. "How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? Then understood they how that He bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees."
What did the Pharisees and Sadducees do? They mixed their religious lies with Biblical truths. Certainly they did not proclaim all error, for then their doctrines would not have been well received by the multitudes. Rather, they cleverly added a little leaven to the truth so that their unsuspecting hearers would swallow the entire deadly mixture.
Satan has many deceitful religious bakers today. They are very skillful in blending their leaven with truth and so make their false gospel very palatable to the natural man. They generally do not come forth blatantly denying the Word of God, else most people would refuse them and their teaching. What they do is blend a small amount of man-made teaching with the holy Scriptures. They talk about salvation by grace, but then mix in works so as to deceive the uninformed. They declare that Christ died on the cross, then blend in their leaven by saying His death is only beneficial if sinners add their faith to what He did. They preach the necessity of the Holy Spirit's power and then make His work to be subject to and dependent upon the free-will of the sinner. How much leaven does it take to modify truth and turn it into error? Paul said to those who were swallowing the false doctrine of the legalists, "A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump" (Galatians 5:9).
Thomas Watson (1620-1686)
He who takes copper instead of gold, wrongs himself; the most counterfeit professor deceives others while he lives-but deceives himself when he dies! To pretend to holiness when there is none, is a vain thing. What were the foolish virgins the better, for their fine lamps, when they lacked oil? What is the lamp of profession, without the oil of saving grace? What comfort will a show of holiness yield at last? Will painted gold enrich? Will painted wine refresh him who is thirsty? Will painted holiness be a cordial at the hour of death? A pretense of sanctification is not to be rested in. Many ships, that have had the name of 'the Hope', 'the Safeguard', 'the Triumph', have been dashed and destroyed upon rocks. Just so, many who have taken the name of saints-have been cast into hell.
2 Peter 1:12: Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. 13: Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance.
