The First Hypocrisy

GOOD OUT OF EVIL
(Acts 5: 1-14)
The days after Pentecost were a blessed time in the church of God. The gospel of Christ Jesus the Lord was preached in the boldness of the Holy Spirit. The great Shepherd added 8000 of his sheep to his congregation which began from only 120. The Holy Spirit united all of them in one body. They were committed to Christ, to his church and to one another (Acts 4: 33-35.)

However, Acts 5:1 begins with "But." That is right. Graceless, hypocrisy was found in one couple in the church even in such a time of grace. In every age the church of God has included tares growing along side the wheat, goats among the sheep, double-minded sinners along side those who possess unfeigned faith (Mt 3:12; 13: 25-40.) Yet, the Lord God of glory is able to use even imposters to bring glory to his name and edify his church.

The crime of Ananias and Sapphira was that they lied to God the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3, 4, 9.) The penalty was immediate death (Acts 5: 5-10.) The result was that the pride and fall of Ananias and Sapphira worked together for good to the church because God worked it together for the good of his church. God met a monetary need of his people through the gift brought by Ananias and Sapphira. Through taking the life of Ananias and Sapphira in an instant, the Lord made those outside of the church fear him so that the church was protected. Also, through his sudden judgment the Lord grew those in the church in true godly fear, in knowledge and understanding of him. Furthermore, the Lord added to the church a multitude both of men and women (Acts 5: 12-14.)

When we behold the mighty workings of our sovereign in this wise way, it makes us realize that apart from our Lord we are nothing, have nothing, and can do nothing. But we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. Beholding such an all-wise, all-powerful God how can we not fall at his feet in reverence and adoration! How can we not give ourselves for the common goal of exalting his great name, knowing this, brethren, that nothing shall separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Ro 8: 34-39.)
