CALL TO WORSHIP
For unto us a Child is born
To us a Son is giv’n
The government shall rest on Him
Th’ anointed One from Heav’n
His name is Wonderful, Counselor
The Mighty God is He
The Everlasting Father and
The humble Prince of Peace.
The increase of His government
And peace shall never end
He’ll reign on David’s ancient throne
As ruler of all men
Upheld with justice, righteousness
Forever His reign will last
The zeal of the Lord God Most High
Will bring these things to pass.
(Tune: “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” p. 90)

JOY TO THE WORLD
I love to sing the hymns about the Savior’s birth. The world associates these songs with Christmas, but they are not Christmas carols. They are songs rejoicing in the birth of Christ the Savior. The joy found in these songs is not that a cute baby was born. The joy in these songs is in WHY that baby was born. God was born as a man so He would be able to establish righteousness as the representative of His elect who were sinful men and women. God was born as a man so He could be the substitute for His elect who were sinful men and women, and by His sacrifice for them, put their sin away. None of that would have been possible unless the Son of God was born as a man.

HAVE YOU COME TO CHRIST?
Every guilty, needy sinner who ever came to Christ for mercy, forgiveness of sin, and salvation received it. The only people who never came to Christ for mercy, forgiveness, or salvation were the self-righteous who didn’t think they needed Christ to save them. If you have not come to Christ, it is because you think the same thing about yourself that the Pharisees thought of themselves. May the Lord be pleased to deliver us from such thinking and draw us to Christ to be our all!

Trusting In The Lord
Recently I had final exams for the fall semester. Throughout the week a couple of my friends and I spent all our time in the library studying, taking notes, watching lecture videos, and doing everything possible to achieve the best grade. Everyday when I prayed, I would make sure to specifically ask the Lord to bless me with a good grade. However, it occurred to me one night that I shouldn’t be specifically asking for things that would best fit my scenario, but to ask the Lord to give me the strength and knowledge according to his will. I realized that whatever the results the exams were all because of the Lord. It wasn’t about how long or hard I studied but the results lay in the hands of the Lord. “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;” (Philippians 1: 29)
Often, we get caught up in our lives and want everything to go according to how we want and what we feel is best, but it isn’t our will of what we want, it’s the will of the Lord. Trusting in Lord and understanding the results for good or bad is according to his will. Everything that happens in this world, even down to the very millisecond, is planned by the Lord and he will do as he pleases. Understand that the Lord is in control, and he will do as he pleases with his children. “Quicken me, O Lord, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble” (Psalms 143: 11)

“IT IS FINISHED” (John 19:30)
The preaching of the Gospel makes known what the finished work of Christ is. The entire work of salvation for God’s people is the finished work, which is completed by Jesus Christ himself. Sometimes it is called the preaching of the cross (1 Corinthians 1:18), or the preaching of Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 1:23). This preaching makes known who the Son of God is and why he came in the flesh like his people. That he was made sin for his people and hanged on a tree as their atoning sacrifice. That his death delivered his people from the hand of God’s justice. And that his life, being raised from the dead by God, gives us life in himself. That he shall return again for his people and take them to be forever with him. “It is finished” by the Lord Jesus Christ. And faith, the gift of God, is revealed by God in all for whom Christ finished this work (Eph. 2:8).
