CALL TO WORSHIP

(Break Thou the Bread of Life)

All of my needs were met in Christ when He

There as a Substitute and Surety

On Calvary's cruel tree, suffered and died

God's law and justice there He satisfied.

Righteousness set in time, promised of old

By holy men of God who all foretold

How, as a Substitute He would prevail,

Pleading His righteousness within the veil.

The blood of Christ alone justifies me,

I look to Him alone for life and see

Propitiation made by suffering sore

To give me life and that for evermore.

Take of the Bread of Life, o sinner friend

He, from your sins defiled has made an end,

Put He away our sins there on the tree

And brought in our salvation full and free.

Psalm 107:8-9

8 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

Why did Christ Die?

According to some people, Christ died to give all a chance of being saved! I do not know that I hate anything more in my soul than to hear that. It makes Jesus Christ so little-that He should do so much, and after all only to get us a chance of being saved. Why, if a man is set up in business, you see how often it happens that he fails in it; and if man cannot manage the paltry things of time and sense without being insolvent, what will he do with eternal realities? And if you come a little closer, when God "made man upright" and he had no sinful nature, what did he do with his innocence? He lost it all! And yet poor presumptuous man has the vanity to think you and I could manage the chance of being saved. What an insult it is to the Lord Jesus Christ to fix the eternal honor of God upon chance, and that chance to be managed by a poor sinful creature who is tumbling into half a dozen holes every hour of his life! NO, NO. Thanks be to God for immortal realities and certainties. WHAT IS SAID CONCERNING WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE? He has "put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself;" He has "finished transgression and made an end of sin;" He has "redeemed us from all iniquity;" He has "redeemed us from the curse of the law," from destruction and from the power of the devil; He has "obtained eternal redemption for us;" He has "redeemed us to God." To the honor of the Eternal Trinity it is said, not that the redeemed shall have a chance, but that the redeemed shall "come to Zion with songs, and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away." The Lord Jesus Christ has done this "great" work; and He has gone to heaven shouting "Victory," for "God is gone up with a shout; the Lord with the sound of a trumpet." He rose from the grave as a demonstrative proof that sin was destroyed, law satisfied, God honored, His people eternally and everlastingly saved. And the immortal honors of God unite in their salvation; therefore, He ever lives at the right hand of the Father to make intercession.

William Gadsby, 1773-1844

Thou art a priest forever

One difference in His priesthood and that of Aaron was the superiority of His Person over Aaron. Aaron was a man. Christ is the God-Man. Aaron died. All his successors are dead. Christ "ever liveth to make intercession for us." Read Hebrews 7:23-25. Christ's priesthood is forever.

Another difference in the priesthood of Aaron and that of Christ is that Aaron offered myriad sacrifices for himself and the people. Christ offered one sacrifice for sins. Read Hebrews7: 26-27. His one sacrifice sufficed.

Another difference in Christ's priesthood and that of Aaron is the superiority of His sacrifice. Aaron's sacrifice was merely an atonement. It was a covering for sin. Read Hebrews 10: 1-6."For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sin." Christ's sacrifice satisfied God's law and justice. He "put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself." Read Hebrews 10:7-14. So complete was Christ's sacrifice, no other is needed.

Another difference in the Priesthood of Christ and that of Aaron is our access into the fellowship of God. Under the Mosaic Economy, only the High Priest had access into the Holy of Holies, and that but once a year on the day of atonement. Read Hebrews 9:24-25. By contrast, Christ opened a "new and living way" Read Hebrews 10: 19-22. Under the Mosaic economy the sinner had restrictions for worship. In Christ, he has free access to the throne of grace anytime. As long as Christ is the Priest of God, sinners have access to the throne of grace and He is a Priest forever.
