The Lord's day? Or the Lord's hour? How we have changed!

Make the Lord’s Day, the Lord’s Hour.

This is one time-honored tradition that will probably not need to be changed. Over the years, at least in the Western church, Sunday, which most believe to be the Lord’s Day, is spent in worldly pleasures, with an hour or so tacked on in the morning for religious observance.

The only way one might want to alter this practice is to bring some of that carnality into the church service too, so that members of your growing church will not have to spend extra money on earth’s delights.

That is, have the finest of banquets after every church service. Have video stations set up where movies can be viewed. Erect a gymnasium so that the jocks of the group can enjoy a rousing basketball game and the children can continue their play.

Stores can be added to the growing complex, and libraries containing the latest trends in Christian thought. Your church must be a place of one-stop shopping that will meet every need of the growing saint in terms of his social as well as spiritual life. Saints will not need to keep being harassed about “going into all the world” when the world will start flocking to your mini-city and enjoying the abundant life.

Yes, a little sarcasm again. Church people doing things together is a good thing. But church people doing the world's things together so as to seem normal to the world? Not so good. One can remember a time when the entire day (Some say Saturday, most others, Sunday) was given to holy things. Prayer. Fasting. Church meetings. True fellowship. Telling others of Jesus. Ministering to the sick and needy. Yes, these are holy things. Watching a football game, gorging one's self, going to a carnival or other place of worldly amusement... these are not holy things, and in no way can they be stretched into fulfilling the idea of keeping a certain day holy.

So where does the fourth commandment belong in a Spirit-filled life, do you think?
