COME DOWN FROM THE CROSS AND WE WILL BELIEVE
At the cross, the religious leaders of the day said, “He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.” (Matt. 27:42) They falsely claimed that if they saw a miracle, they would believe on Christ. Isn’t this what many people are still saying in our day? They say if they see miracles they will believe. They say they will believe if the Lord will miraculously provide for them or heal them. But this is not true. The only way any sinner will ever believe on the Lord Jesus Christ is by the revelation of the Holy Spirit, through the preaching of the Word. (I Cor. 1:21-24) Let us always make much of the preaching of the Word of God. If hearing the Word of God preached will not convince a man to trust Christ, you can rest assured no miracle will be able to do it either.

WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH
Spiritual life and faith are two distinct things, yet they are so vitally joined together that neither exists alone. Where there is spiritual life, there is faith in Christ; and where there is faith in Christ, there is spiritual life. "Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God" (I John 5:1). In a newborn infant, if God gives physical life, it breathes; if life is absent, it does not. Breathing is an evidence that life is present; but also, life cannot exist without breathing. It is even so spiritually. God gives life; the evidence is faith in Christ. No faith in Christ, no life! The question we should ask ourselves is not, do we have life? But, do we believe on Christ? "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."

Law and Grace
Here are a few contrasts between law and grace. Law manifests what is in man - sin; Grace manifests what is in God - love; Law demands righteousness from men; Grace brings righteousness to men; Law sentences a living man to death; Grace brings a dead man to life; Law speaks of what men must do for God: Grace tells of what Christ has done for men; Law gives a knowledge of sin; Grace puts away sin; Law brings God out to men; Grace brings men into God.

Can Sinners Be Saved Without the Preaching of the Gospel?
“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?....So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:14,15,17
I recognize the sovereignty of God, and preach it as fully and dogmatically as anyone. “Our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased” (Psalm 115:3). Were it his pleasure to do so, he could save his elect by the merits of Christ’s righteousness and shed blood and the power of his Spirit without the use of any means whatsoever. But it is not his pleasure to do so. I hear men say, “God is sovereign. He can save sinners with the use of means, without the use of means, or in spite of the means used.” That may be a very logical supposition. And I appreciate the obvious attempt to protect God’s sovereignty. But God’s sovereignty does not need our protection. And the supposition is false because it is not according to the Scriptures.
The fact is, God does not save sinners apart from the preaching of the gospel of his free and sovereign grace in Christ. (Read Romans 1:16-17; 1 Corinthians 1:21-23; Hebrews 4:12; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:23-25). And if God does not save men without the preaching of the gospel, then it is obvious that no man can be saved without the preaching of the gospel.
Does that mean that all who believe a false gospel are lost? Certainly, it does. Those who trust the helpless god, Jesus, and spirit of free-will, works religion are as ignorant and lost as the naked tribesman who worships his dead, helpless totem-pole.
Does this mean that I was lost before I knew the gospel? Of course, it does. Men may be sincere in false religion. They may have great, life changing experiences in false religion. But no one is saved in false religion, neither you, nor me, nor our kinsmen, nor our friends. It is the truth, only the truth, that makes sinners free. God does not use religious lies to save his elect. A person may mentally know the truth and not be saved. But no one can be saved who does not know the truth.
What does this fact require of us? We must renounce that former, false religion of works and confess Christ in baptism. “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:17-18). “And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues” ( Revelation 18:4). Then we must devote ourselves and all that we have to the preaching of the gospel, so that men and women may hear, know, believe, and be saved by the gospel.
