Our Catechism defines idolatry as

Having or inventing something in which one trusts in place of our alongside of the only true God, who has revealed himself in his Word.

In the midst of this present pandemic and panic the idols are being invented, paraded, pawned, and adored as ever before, and as never before.

For the idols are old, but new. They are Zeuses, Poseidons, Aphrodites and CoVidites with new names and new allure for both the simple and the sophisticated.

A Pantheon for a twenty-first century Pandemic..

What are some of these idols?

Science, and, in particular, the science of finding a vaccine for a CoViD or whatever else ails you.

Government, and, in particular, the government that will give us stuff while it takes away our jobs which we didn’t like anyway, and will see us through, and beyond, one regulation and free meal after another.

The human spirit, heroic and philanthropic, that sings in the dark, entertains, and especially reminds us of what man can be, and do, for man, and how we can overcome any adversity, rise from any ashes, and become One.

This trinity of gods, each one and altogether saying I Am…some way, truth, or life, each one calling for our trust, our respect, our devotion, is truly gaining a following in the panic, among the desperate crowds.

A new creed is gaining currency: In science we trust. In government we trust. In man we trust.

These gods, great, powerful, persuasive and popular as they might be, can never deliver body or soul.

They are, as Scripture teaches, nothing. But dangerous nothings. Nothings from hell, leading to hell.

Thank the one and only God that by faith

We know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. (I John 5:20, 21)
