The God Who is simply God is the only one of His kind.

That is, He is the only true God. As He says through the prophet

I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me…(Isaiah 46: 9)

There are lots of other gods, however, who are not like God. Scripture calls them idols. They are also called nothings. The Apostle elaborates:

We know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God but one. But even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is one God…( cf. I Corinthians 8:4-6)

Idols are nothing in themselves. They have no existence, no life in themselves.. Where do they come from then? From creation. And from many creators. These latter are the many sinful people with sinfully creative imaginations and with great and sinful resolve and energy to worship anything, even nothing, instead of the living God.

None of the creators had to go to school for this creative idol-making business. They all just fell into it. In Adam the whole human race became a pack, a herd, a family…of idolaters. These, tripping through the forest, or on drugs, gazing at the sun, moon, and stars, or their navels, contemplating Man, or Earth, or whales or snails, or even First Principles do find their gods.

Then they pen their philosophies, and compose their songs of and to all the things they find and make worth worshiping. Then they describe and sell their peculiar (and always pushed “happy” and “liberating”) ways of devotion to these gods.

In the present pandemic the creative juices of the idolaters are flowing, and in the market place of ideas, policies, programs and proffered solutions the god-makers are making a killing.

For people are desperate. The old idols have been taken down by a virus. A looming, dooming new Normal, requires new and promising and more uniting and more powerful idols..

Many are the idols now on sale. Do we see them? Are we tempted to buy?

Pandemic…pantheon!

In the new kingdom of ancient Greece and of old and new gods…

Thank God, that for us there is, by grace, one God.

And He is ours because we are His.

And He made us, and not we Him.

For such a time as this.
