Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one…(Deuteronomy 6:4)
If we would be mindful of God we must be mindful of the truth that He is one.
That God is one means two things. First, He is a simple and spiritual Being. Second, that He is the only simple and spiritual Being—there is no other.
This is our faith and our confession:
We all believe with the heart and confess with the mouth that there is one only simple and spiritual Being which we call God. (The Belgic Confession, Article 1)
When we think on God being the “simple and spiritual Being” that He is, we think of the truth that there are no “parts” to or in God, nor any limitations in the godhead.
“Parts” speak of other parts. One having “parts” needs the parts, and each part needs the other. Not so, no parts or parts needing parts in the infinite, seamless spiritual Being Who is God! Among the best of men in the prime of their life and having a good day we say they “have it (all their parts, faculties and energies) all together.” With God we say
He is simply God altogether, God Being Himself, always have a God day, in the prime of His divinity, needing nothing, simply, purely, wonderfully God!
Each Person of the Trinity, for example, is not a “part” of God, but each is fully God. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit each participate fully in the essence of God, as the one, indivisible God.
Each virtue of God is not a part of God, or sometimes active, sometimes not. All His virtues are perfectly one in Him. Always He is wise, righteous, loving, simply and at once.
The will of God also is not a part of God. We might even say, with some theologians, that the will of God is God willing. The will of God, therefore, is always one, never two, never confused, foolish, frustrated, contradictory, never less than divine. Besides, God’s will is never contingent on things and forces and man’s sinful stubbornness. Or we have a god who depends on the very things He has made.
One God, purely and simply, ever and always God. How God this is of God!
Great thing to remember in our day: midst the complexities and confusion, the perplexities, the panic, and the proposed solutions of a pandemic and a disease-threatened society.
Mindful of God we take heart that these things are not perplexities and problems to Him.
To God they are simple. In and over all of them He is and will be simply God.
Only hear O Church: the Lord our God is the one only simple and spiritual Being.
This is the faith, the simple faith of the children of God. Simple…and so profound.
For such a time as this.
With you in Him, confiding in the Savior and His truth and love,
