What is your beloved more than another beloved, that you thus adjure us? Song of Solomon 5:9
A wonderful truth of Scripture in general, and Solomon’s Song in particular, is how many dimensions may be viewed and applied depending upon the struggles you and I face as individual believers saved by God’s grace. In verse 6, when the bride opens the door and the King, her Beloved, is not there, it may be viewed as broken fellowship with Christ, occurring because of the selfish corruptions arising in our flesh (vv3-5). Mr. Spurgeon addresses Christ’s delay in prayer to establish patience when he ponders, “I called him, but he gave no answer” (v6c). Today, let’s consider Christ’s ascended absence from verse 6, and view some of the answers to the questions others pose— we testify by an oath (adjure) to them of our crucified, risen and ascended Lord Jesus, our Beloved. Here are only a few of the beautiful pictures within the poetry— Jesus is glorious (radiant) and red (ruddy) due to the blood He shed for our forgiveness (v10a); and unique in His life and work (v10b). Jesus possesses heaven’s authority (head of gold, v11a); yet for a time, He took upon Himself human flesh and bore our iniquities upon His head (locks are wavy, black as a raven, v11b). Our Lord is the Prince of Peace (eyes are like doves, v12a). His words flow with atonement truth, trumpeted to our ears (lips are lilies, dripping liquid myrrh, v13b). Christ’s comforting embrace for believers, and salvation outstretched for unbelievers, has all the power and strength of almighty God (arms are rods of gold, v14a), adorned with precious providential works to bring either to pass because all His works are as costly as His work on the cross (set with jewels, v14b).
Our Beloved, who is radiant, Made ruddy by the cross; Has outstretch’d arms for deviants, Like us, who once were lost.
