It is truly remarkable how this virus thing affects us all, whether we contract the disease, know someone who has, or are jobless, inconvenienced, and fearful because of it.

This thing has become our experience, our life.

It is true. A tornado lifting your house off the ground. A pandemic in the world. Government regulations. Sudden unemployment. A friend in the ICU. These things no one can ignore. They catch our attention, they fill our thoughts, move our emotions, influence what we say, where we shop, how fast we run, what we hold onto, what we leave behind.

We live and breathe them, or they take our breath away.

Then there is the media, shaping the experience, speaking into our life. TV news, internet news, you tube videos, corona virus hit songs (no joke), and the like…These all present and (often) pontificate, rant, or strum guitars about the latest pandemic news: the cases, the deaths, the regulations, the economic woes, the latest (and ever-changing) scientific models and projections, how the President is handling this all very badly…or would lighten us up some times with news of this act of philanthropy or that.

To flip the song on its head: media like a pandemic grows. Spreads like a virus. And if it does not kill us, it can surely shape our lives, almost as much as the virus itself.

What this all for the Christian?

If media we must, remember that as Christians the truth of the revealed Word, the Bible is the reality.

We regard this crisis, therefore, as opportunity to grow in grace, and to serve the cause of Christ.

We will be, therefore, redeeming the time (Ephesians 5:16), walking wisely, in Scripture light.

We shall not be concerned, therefore, to the point of distraction, to learn what CNN or the White House have to say, or become fretful and full of worry at the prognosis of the latest Dr. Grim.

For the truth is what Abraham learned when he sacrificed his son: the truth of Jehovah-Jireh, God will provide (Genesis 22:14).

The truth is what we learn in the New Testament: the provision for the sin virus--Jesus, God’s Son.

The truth is abundant and eternal life, life which nothing can take away, through faith in this Jesus. This truth--our only and sure comfort and salvation in life, in pandemic, in death.

Media or Mediator?

Which truth yours? Which life yours?
