1 Peter 5:10 “But ye God of all grace, which hath called you to his euerlastinge glory in Christ Iesu, shal his owne selfe make you perfecte, which suffre a litle season: eue he shal settle, strength, and stablish you. If the text today looks a bit strange it is because it was printed thus in 1535.
Myles Coverdale died this day (20th January) in 1569. He complied and published in 1535 a complete English Bible. This became known as ‘The Coverdale Bible.’ It was the first complete English translation of the Bible (not just the Old Testament or New Testament), and the first complete printed translation into English. The Tyndale translation had been supplied nine years previous but it was only the New Testament.
Coverdale lived in dangerous times but escaped martyrdom and died peacefully. He always sensed his need of Divine strength. The following is a prayer of his.
“O gracious Father, strengthen thou us in thy work and in thy truth; that in the thing which thou hast begun in us, we may stedfastly continue to the end. Expel out of us the fear of death, and stablish us through thy Holy Spirit, that we manfully may despise and jeopard this life for the life eternal. Grant, O God, to the shepherds of thy sheep a fervent love to the truth and thy glory. Strengthen them with thy Spirit, that they valiantly standing by the flock, may even with their death confirm thy people in the truth.”
