Psalm 37:7, “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.”

Yes, ‘rest’ the text says and ‘don’t fret’. Rest in Christ. Rest on His person and rest on His finished work. He is such a Saviour and so firm are His promises that we can confidently rest in Him.

David Dickson (1583-1663) was the Professor of Theology at Glasgow and later at Edinburgh. He was very influential in framing the minds and lives of those young ministers that suffered in Scotland in later decades. He is the author of many works that are still easily available today. He helped to draw up the Directory for Public Worship, and with James Durham compiled The Sum of Saving Knowledge. Both of these writings are usually printed with the Westminster Confession of Faith. The Sum of Saving Knowledge was instrumental in the conversion of Robert Murray M’Cheyne.

Dickson when dying was asked what was the principal subject on which his thoughts were engaged, and he answered, “I am gathering up all my good works, and all my bad works, tying them into one bundle, and throwing them all alike down at the foot of the cross, and am resting alone upon the finished work of Jesus.”

Yes, I rest in Thee, Beloved,
Know what wealth of grace is Thine,
Know Thy certainty of promise,
And have made it mine.
