The Memory of the Just is Blessed.”

Proverbs 10:7

Henry Mahan was called home on May 31, 2019. He was a faithful preacher of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ for more than sixty years. He was a dear friend to me, to my family, and to this church. The Lord used him in my life more than any other man, and I will always be grateful for him. His ministry epitomized what the Apostle Paul meant by determining to preach “Christ and Him crucified!”

He visited us when I was a missionary in Mexico several times and though he couldn’t speak the language; I saw him connect to believers in a special way. It appeared to me that he was able to communicate his love for Christ and his people through his smile and touch.

He preached the gospel here in our congregation several times in our early days. The internet has come into being since then, and when I have been asked about listening to preachers by way of the internet I have always had one recommendation. “Look up Henry Mahan on Sermon Audio and you can’t go wrong.”

The proverb declares that “the memory of the just shall be blessed,” and we find this true of those that we have known who have been called home. It is certainly true to me about Henry Mahan. On the day of his death I thought of what a preacher said when he heard of the death of C H Spurgeon. “The tallest tree in the forest has fallen.” He was truly that to me.
