I had a dear man ask me two questions recently and I could not have been happier to have answered them for him. After some time spent hearing the message of the gospel, he asked me: “How can I know that I’m saved?” I told him, God will give you faith in His Word and in His Son! I then proceeded to ask him some questions. I told him that the word of God says that he is an absolute sinner! And I asked him: do you believe that? Do you believe that you are nothing but an unworthy, wretched sinner? He said, yes I do! I told him that the word of God says that the Lord Jesus Christ came into this world to save particular sinners that His Father gave to Him before the foundation of the world. I asked him: Do you believe that your only hope is that God the Father chose to give you to Christ His Son, and that Christ washed you from your sins in His own blood? He said, yes I do! I told Him that the Lord Jesus Christ said from the cross of Calvary that the salvation of His people is finished through His death as their substitute. There is nothing left to be done. The Lord Jesus Christ paid it all - ALL the debt we owe! I asked him: Do you believe Christ? Do you rest in His word and trust Him? He said, I sure do! I said: That’s how we can know that we belong to Him; The Spirit of God reveals the truth of Christ to us - who He is, and what he has done - and causes us to believe! We believe Christ! We believe ON Christ! I told him that the gospel message was not an invitation to receive mercy, but a notification that IN CHRIST mercy has already been shown!

He thought about that for a while and then he came back up to me and asked: “How much mercy does the Lord have for me?” I said: It’s infinite! His mercy for sinners will never run out! It endureth forever! It starts over brand new every morning! His face lit up, and he started laughing, and he said: “That’s the greatest news I’ve ever heard in my life!”
