Three times the Lord asked Peter, “Lovest thou me?” That is the real question isn’t it? What think ye of Christ? Do you love Him or hate Him? The question isn’t if you love the doctrines of grace but do you love Christ who those doctrines declare. If you love Christ you will love the doctrines that teach who He is. The question isn’t do you love others who love Christ. The salvation of our souls is found in loving Christ. If you would be saved you must believe upon and love the Lord Jesus Christ. Loving someone else who has saving faith won’t do your soul any good. Although if we love Christ we will love others too. I wonder how we would respond if the Lord had asked us the same thing He asked Peter, “Lovest thou me?”

The forbearance and longsuffering of God towards sinners is truly astonishing. He was longer destroying Jericho than in creating the world.

THAT I MAY KNOW HIM
Before the Apostle Paul’s conversion, he knew the law, he knew the traditions, and he thought he knew God. But when the Lord crossed his path on the Damascus Road, and revealed himself to Paul, then he found out who Christ is. He was never the same. And from that day forward Paul’s aim and desire was to know more about the one who knew him. It was all about knowing a person, not just knowing a doctrine. 2 Timothy 1:12 I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Paul was not afraid to preach the one he knew, he was not ashamed of him, because the one He knew was not ashamed of him. This gave him a boldness to preach his Gospel, and he wanted others to know this one that he knew. Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Everybody is trying to figure out who they are and what they’re supposed to do. The answers to those two questions are very simple. Who you are: “Every man at his best state is altogether vanity” Ps. 39:5. What are you to do: “This is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another” I John 2:23. There it is. The secret to life is not found in who you are and what you should do, but rather in who He is and what He has done. Trying to figure yourself out is like going down in a well. The deeper you go, the darker it gets. The Lord did not say; This is life eternal that they may know themselves… Oh, no. He said, “This is life eternal that they might know thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ who thou hast sent” John. 17:3. Figure out who He is and what He has done, and you will know all you need to know. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” Matt. 6:33.
