Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. Psalm 1:1-2
Everyone Can’t Be Right
Some think that it does not matter what a man believes so long as he is sincere. The average person thinks that all religions are right. “You go to your church and I’ll go to mine, you believe what you think is right and I’ll believe what I think is right, and we’ll meet in heaven someday and rejoice in our respective saviors.”
No! My friends, we cannot all be right when we contradict one another so. It is imperative that we search the Scriptures and see what God says. A doctrine is not true because I believe it or because you believe it, but it is true only if God says it!
I do not ask whether you believe what I preach; perhaps you do not. But I ask you to search the Scriptures and determine whether these things be so. I am not afraid to submit my belief in God’s immutable sovereignty, man’s total fall and ruin, God’s elective grace, Christ’s effectual atonement, the Spirit’s invincible call, and the perseverance of the sheep to THE WORD OF GOD!
Pastor Henry T. Mahan (bulletin article 1984)
If I am uneasy in reference to the settlement of the question of sin, I cannot worship, I cannot enjoy fellowship either with God over His people, nor can I be an intelligent or effective witness for the Lord Jesus. The heart must be at rest before God as to the perfect remission of sin before we can worship Him in Spirit and truth. If there be guilt on the conscience, there must be terror in the heart; a heart filled with terror cannot be happy or a worshiping heart. It’s only from a heart filled with Christ as our only Sacrifice for sin that true and acceptable worship can ascend to the Father.
Pastor Scott Richardson, 1983
DEAD TO SIN
“How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?” (Romans 6:2).
There is a death TO sin. I’m not talking about death to the power of sin. I’m talking about death to the guilt of sin. I’m referring to a death to the condemning power of sin. In Christ I am dead to sin’s charge against me. I am dead to sin’s condemnation of me. I am dead to sin’s judgment against me. Please understand me. I’m not saying that I am not dead to the influence of sin. I’m not dead to the temptation of sin. But the curse of sin has been removed from me. The claim sin had on me is now gone. My sin has been crucified with Christ.
If a man commits a horrendous crime and is sentenced to life in prison, and he dies before he begins to serve his sentence, can that man still serve his time? No! He is dead! He is dead to the charge, verdict, judgment and the condemnation of his crime. Being dead, the law can no longer extract justice from him. That’s what every believing child of God who trusts in Christ alone has become. They have become DEAD TO SIN; they cannot live any longer therein. Pastor David Eddmenson
CHRIST IS THE FRIEND OF SINNERS
The religious people during the Lord’s earthly ministry would not come to Him for salvation because they looked down on a man who would be the friend of sinners. “The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!” (Luke 7:24) But this is the very reason sinners flock to Christ: He is the friend of sinners! The Lord Jesus Christ is such a friend of sinners that He did everything necessary to redeem them from their sin.
I ask you which are you? Are you a religious person who is so good you look down on and despise sinners? If you are, you will see no need of the Friend of sinners. But if you are a helpless sinner, run to Christ Jesus because He is the Friend who forgives the sin of sinners.
Pastor Frank Tate
Christ Receives Sinners
“Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them” (Luke 15:1-2).
While the self-righteous Pharisees and Scribes withdrew from the Lord Jesus Christ and then harshly criticized Him; many publicans and sinners drew near to hear Him. What a blessing from the Lord to have a willingness to draw near to Him (John 6:44) and then to have ears to actually hear a word from Him (Act 10:33). His words are words of life (John 5:24). His words are words of salvation (Rom. 1:16; Heb. 4:12).
The worst thing the Pharisees and scribes said of the Lord, “This man recieveth sinners, and eateth with them;” is the best thing any sinner could hear. It is not sin that keeps a man from hearing the good news of the gospel of Christ, it is his presumed righteousness he is going about to establish by his religious deeds (Rom. 10:1-4). No man will ever come to Christ while he is resting in the deeds of the law for salvation (Rom.3:19-20). It is only by the almighty power of His sovereign grace that will effectually quicken us and make us alive in Christ, that will cause us to draw near to Him, to hear Him and to believe Him (John 5:21:Eph. 2:1; 1 John 5:1).
This Man receives sinners! What a miracle of amazing grace (1 Tim. 1:5; 2 Tim. 1:9-12).
