To demonstrate God’s amazing act of love for us, I’ve often used an illustration of a train switch. There’s a freight train barreling down on the split in the tracks, and you must decide which way to send it. On one side, your child is stuck in the tracks. On the other, a medical doctor who has discovered a cure for cancer but not yet published it.

It is within the realm of possibility that someone would sacrifice their child in order to save the lives of countless cancer patients, but what if instead of a doctor, the person on the tracks was a condemned murderer? Would you still offer up your child to die in their place? In reality, you and I are the condemned ones, and God’s only Son is on the other side of the tracks. In God’s love, He let His only Son die in our place.

“For God so loved…”

That is love in the Greatest Degree, when God demonstrated His love for you. There is no greater love than for someone to lay down their life in your place, and that is what Jesus did for you.

It is good to talk about love, and to say that you love someone like your spouse or a family member. It is even better to demonstrate that love.

Don’t ever doubt the degree of God’s love for you. It is a degree of love that the world had never seen before and a degree of love that can never be matched. You are worth the life of God’s only Son - thank Him for that today!
