One of our men often thanks me for reminding him that he is a sinner I know exactly what he means: if I realize that I am a sinner I must look to Christ and my soul is comforted when I look to Christ. Martin Luther felt the same way. He said, “Every time you insist that I am a sinner, you call me to remember the benefit of Christ my Redeemer, upon whose shoulders, and not mine, lie all my sins. So when you say I am a sinner, you do not terrify me, but comfort me immeasurably.”
The only reason we perceive ourselves to be pretty good is because we only compare ourselves with people who are pretty bad. Pastor Henry Mahan
WITNESSING
God’s people are to be witnesses of Christ in this world because God has made us His witnesses and given us the great honor to bear witness of Christ to our friends and neighbors. “Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord” (Isaiah 43:10). Yet I know many believers find it difficult to know how to witness to our unbelieving friends. Here are some things to keep in mind when witnessing others.
A witness is someone who tells what he knows is true. A witness is not called on to explain why something is true. A witness is only called on to tell what he knows to be true from first hand experience. A believer is to be a witness of God. If you would witness to others simply tell them what you know to be true about God. Don’t feel compelled to explain God, just tell who God is.
A believer knows by experience that God is God (Isaiah 43:12). Since God is God, God saves whom He will. God has mercy on whom He will (Romans 9:15), so we should beg God for mercy.
A believer knows that salvation doesn’t have anything to do with what a sinner does or does not do. Salvation is all in Christ and what He has done for His people (Luke 24:46-48), so we must look to Christ for all of our salvation.
A believer knows the truth of the gospel. Every believer is not a preacher, but believers know where the gospel is preached. When we witness of Christ we should always invite people to come hear the gospel with us because God is pleased to save His people through the preaching of the gospel (I Corinthians 1:21).
BE NOT AFRAID, ONLY BELIEVE
These are the words our Lord spoke to Jairus, when his friends came telling him of his daughters death and of the lack of necessity for him to trouble the master any further. Natural men always set limits on the ability and willingness of Christ to save sinners. While she hung on by a thread, they had hope. But as soon as the thread was gone, so was their hope. Because of their unbelief and doubt, they were neither permitted to follow or enter in to see His glory.
God give us the quiet submissive faith of Jairus, who patiently waited on the Lord and was permitted, by the Master to see the glory of life in His touch.
