A Thought From the Word

"My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let Thy glory be above all the earth." Psalm 57:7, 11

Verse 1 of this psalm lets us know that this was a time of calamity for David. The title caption of the psalm tells us it was when he was fleeing from Saul in the cave. So, it was a time of heavy burden, concern and great need. In this psalm David rightfully prays for protection and safety. He brings his case before the Lord, and cries out to Him for deliverance.

But, as we read here, he also was determined to praise God in the middle of this difficult situation. "My heart is fixed." In such times, it is easy to be completely focused on ourselves. It is not wrong to pray for our needs (in fact it is very right!), but we should also determine to worship God in hard times. Praise has a way of helping to settle and focus our spirit.

Additionally, David prayed that God would be exalted. Through this situation with Saul, the fearful circumstances, the danger, the unknown, David prayed that God would be glorified. This should be our prayer as well. We don't know the final outcome of our troubles; we don't know what tomorrow holds, but let our prayer be, "Lord, in this trouble, work for your glory. Get glory for yourself no matter what."
