God's Sovereignty and Prayer

A Thought From the Word

"Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will yet for this be inquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock." Ezekiel 36:37

God had just made great promises to restore His people from captivity in Babylon. This was His great purpose and plan of grace, to rescue them from bondage and lavish His mercy upon them. But, as the chapter closes, God makes this statement that He would be inquired of (sought, asked for) by Israel to do it for them.

We cannot fully fathom God's sovereignty and man's responsibility. But, we can understand that when God purposes to do something, nothing can stop Him! We understand that He is all-wise, all-powerful and supreme over all. We can also understand that God calls on us to pray to Him, to ask of Him for His blessings. Furthermore, we should be able to grasp that one of the ways that God is pleased to perform His will is thru our prayers! It is not that He is dependent upon our prayers, but He delights to use them. Additionally, we rejoice that He is not limited to our prayers, but He does use prayer in a great role to accomplish His purposes.

God is going to save who He is pleased to save, but this should not lead us to fail to pray that God would graciously bring sinners to life and faith in Christ. God is going to heal who He is going to heal, but He calls on us to pray for healing. God is going to send rain to end a drought if He wants to do that, but we would be foolish to not pray for rain. The examples could go on and on.

Our point is not to lead us to a theological headache. But, it is to see the high priority God places on the prayers of His people. God is pleased when His people earnestly seek His mighty works. When we diligently seek God, we are showing by our actions how highly we value Him and His blessings. So, pray diligently and then rest in the sovereign wisdom of God. Don't think you can understand it fully, but do understand and rejoice in what is revealed.
