This chapter is quite well known to us. It admonishes us as husbands and wives to pattern our lives after that relationship of Christ and His Church. But today we look at the general admonishions here. "See that ye walk circumspectly...." We are children of the Light and you and I have the calling to walk a sanctified life being enlightened in Christ!
Paul often talks about our walk in this life. The life of a child of God on a pathway to Glory.... We are continually on the move...walking in this world! It encompasses our whole/entire life. Time propels us forward and Paul combines our walk/life with time/continual walking. Time that affords us CONTENT. And the question is...how do you and I walk or occupy our time within our walk which Paul says IS our conversation? One can listen to us speak and even observe how we walk and see that walk/conversation in us.
Paul says you must walk circumspectly. The original says walk MATICULOUSLY or EXACTLY and has to do with the precision with which we walk. WALK PRECISELY!!! How? Two things: "Not as fools but wise and redeeming the times." Even as in Christ's sermon on the mount about the wise and foolish man. There is a way to pattern your conversation by wisdom and a way to pattern after foolishness. Only a fool walks against the knowledge that he knows! Some do not have the knowledge however as the preaching of the Gospel is foolishness to those who do not know the truth. But those who He has touched believe and Christ is made wisdom to us! When we know Christ the scales from our eyes are taken away and we understand all things spiritually and can see them clearly. Not Einsteins or mathmaticians but those able to see and know the truth from the lie. We can look at all things here below and see there inherent value and can judge time in the light of eternity. We can apply it to our time and we buy every moment for a certain purpose and it is not to be wasted.
It means we can see each moment as it has ETERNAL consequences! This life, time, every moment has a purpose.....that God may be glorified in each of those moments. We ask how we can use each moment to HIS Glory even against the lies of this world. We apply the knowledge we know and it is wisdom. What is the impetus? That God may be glorified. Ask yourself how and then you will apply His commandments and will walk accordingly. "Because the days are evil...." A working evil as the world walks around as a drunk. Not as fools but as wise whose foundation is founded on the bedrock of the Lord, charting a course that is enlightened by HIM!!!
