Jesus was a marked man! He had healed an invalid when He wasn't supposed to. He called God His Father, a claim to be equal to God. He said He came down from heaven. He compared faith to eating His flesh and drinking His blood. So the Jews schemed to kill Hm. And waited for Him at the Feast.
Let's return to the seventh chapter of the Gospel of John, verses 1-24 (last Sunday we examined vv. 1-13, today vv.14-24).
Jesus waited to leave Galilee for the Feast in Jerusalem because the Jews were seeking to kill Him, but His time had not fully (completely) come. Jesus was on a mission and the mission's path and schedule must be kept exactly. His skeptical brothers had gone up to Jerusalem before Him. Popular support was in decline. The Jews' pursuit of Him was so aggressive that the people were afraid to openly support Him – or even speak of Him. Then Jesus entered teh city, sat in the temple, and began to teach. First the crowds, then the Jews!
Jesus soon exposed the hypocrisy of His Jewish persecutors: 1. Jesus defends His teaching (vv.14-18). 2. Jesus defends His healing (vv.19-24).
