Ligonier Ministries, founded by theologian R.C. Sproul, conducts a survey every two years titled "The State of Theology" in which they ask unbelievers and professing Christians key theological and moral questions.
Here is a sampler of responses from America's professing Christians in 2020:
Almost 1/3 of American "Christians" - Jesus Christ was a merely a good teacher, but not both God and man. Yet Jesus said, "I and the Father are One" – John 10:30 Nearly 1/2 of "Christians" - Man is essentially good. But Jesus said, "Moses gave you the Law, and you don't keep it." – John 7:19 Forty-two percent American "Christians" - God accepts all religions. Jesus clearly said "I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, but through Me." – John 14:6
We're getting to the point where not even Christians believe what Christ teaches!
Let's jump back into John 7, and read vv.25-36. Jesus continues His teaching during the Feast of the Booths.
In this morning's text, the festival crowd responds to Jesus' teaching in variety of ways, from confusion to acceptance to animosity. Those same responses are still common! Sadly, even among so-called Christians.
So let's ask the question…
How do people respond to Jesus? In the first century, and the 21st… 1. Confusion (vv.25-30). 2. Acceptance (v.31). 3. Hostility (vv.32-35).
