John 7:1-13 introduce a new section of John's Gospel. This section documents the unfolding of the Jews' intensifying hatred of Jesus, and of diminishing support from the crowds. One commentator writes that His ministry seemed to be in crisis. Consider the statement which begins this section: 7:1 – "the Jews were seeking to kill Him." Then here's the section ends: 8:59 – "They picked up stones to throw at Him." So the Jews' desire to destroy Jesus bookends this new phase of Jesus' ministry. And then, from the end of chapters seven and eight, it is only six more months to the cross. To introduce this section, we begin in Galilee, but we don't stay there for long. Let's outline this account like this: Jesus watches His support slip away and His time draw near: 1.) vv.1-5 A skeptical challenge. 2.) vv.6-9 A timing problem. 3.) vv.10-13 Festival intrigue.
