We live in an "always on" society in which lives are filled with the never-ending responsibilities of home, work, and school and we live in a pressure cooker of having so much to do and not enough time to do it. Does anybody ever feel like that? So when it comes to rest, well who has time for that, right? And yet here we are confronted in these verses with the mystery of an all-powerful God who created everything out of nothing in just 6 ordinary days, taking a day off for rest. But we know that God doesn't need rest does he? Psalm 121:4 says that he neither slumbers nor sleeps. So then this seventh day at the end of creation week must point to something beyond his own need of rest – it points to our need of rest. And not just physical rest, but true rest in Him. That's why God rested on the seventh day – to point us back to himself as the source and sustainer of our souls.
