Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, we come this evening to a short text on walking on wisdom. The key section that describes what these verses are talking about is the second half of v. 15, “Do not be unwise, but wise.” We are called to wisdom! Of course, as we have seen over and over in our morning series on Proverbs, a wise son makes a glad Father, and it is our calling as sons of God through faith in Jesus to walk in wisdom because we want to please our Father. In the context of Ephesians 5, we have moved from the darkness in which the Gentiles walk to the light in which God’s children walk. Because we are bathed in light, including intellectual light, we need to live in an intellectually illuminated way. In other words, we need to be wise. And the apostle Paul provides four points that together describes what results wisdom will have in the life of the one who pursues it. Wisdom will make you walk carefully. Wisdom will understand the character of the times and respond appropriately in its use of time. And wisdom ultimately depends on understanding Jesus’ will. Brothers and sisters, walking in wisdom shapes your lifestyle in accordance with what Jesus wants.
