What does the church look like when it’s full of the Spirit, the Holy One of God? What does it do? Our passage answers that with four major descriptors. The members of a Spirit-filled church speak to one another in song. They sing to Jesus. They thank the Father. And they submit to one another. These are four positive realities that demonstrate the presence of the Spirit. Put negatively, a spirit-filled church is not loaded with substance abusers. Those who have the Holy Spirit don’t need alcohol in their lives. They don’t need drugs. They have something better — the intoxicating, empowering presence of the Spirit of the Living God. So brothers and sisters, let’s look closely at this portrait of a Spirit-filled church. These practices gratify the Spirit and come from Him in a self-reinforcing way. We can only do what the Spirit loves when we are strengthened by His presence — but the more we do what He loves, the more He manifests Himself to us and strengthens us to continue blessing Him. So let’s sing as people filled with the Spirit, giving thanks and submitting to one another through His mighty grace.
