Jesus taught that we cannot serve both God and money. In the second half of Acts 19 we read of two contrasting responses to Christ and the Gospel. The first is a great revival evoking repentance among believers who had been practising and profiting from magic arts. The second is a great resistance, almost causing a riot by those who feared the loss of profits from their craft. The issue is not one of profits, but one of worship– not a matter of money, but of the heart. And the same issue is no less real today as it was in Paul's, but so too is the gospel no less the power of God to save. May the Word of God and his loving kindness lead us to repentance and renew our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus as it did that day in Acts 19.
