Did Jesus say something that bothers you? For example, His challenge to the Rich Young Ruler: "Go, sell all that you have, and come, follow Me (Matthew 19)." Or to a tentative disciple: "Let the dead bury their own dead…but as for you, go (Luke 9)." And to a crowd, "Take up your cross and follow Me (Mark 8)." And then there's this, "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple (Luke 8)." Finally, to the Jews in Capernaum, "Eat My flesh…drink My blood (John 6)." There are people who are interested in Jesus but offended by His words. So His hard words become a test. Let's open our NT to the final portion of John 6, 60-71. John 6 is one long account which documents Jesus' encounter with a crowd. The story has some interesting words to describe the crowd: grumbling, arguing, stumbling, withdrawing, … betraying. But the provocative words are Jesus' words: Bread of Life, eternal life, flesh, blood, eat, drink, believe…live. Hard words to a dwindling crowd. Jesus' words are a true or false test. i.) vv.60-65 – The false followers fail, and fall away; ii.) vv.66-71 – The true disciples are determined to stay.
