Aim: To be thankful that God's grace preserves us in Christ.
Exegesis: Strike one: our weakness revealed. We sometimes do not witness (vv. 66-67) or trust (v. 68) as we ought. Strike two: our depravity revealed. Sin fosters even more alienation from the truth (vv. 69-70a) and finally brings on a serious rejection of the truth (vv. 70b-71). Strike three: our restoration revealed. God's grace (v. 72a) and Spirit (v. 72b) brings us back to Him.
Key verse: v. 72 ''A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, 'Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.' And when he thought about it, he wept.''
