If you have ever driven on a Pennsylvania or New York highway, you may have seen signs warning "Bridge May Be Icy." If you are travelling in summer, the signs appear somewhat humorous. You may think to yourself, "there is no possible way this bridge is icy on a 90-degree day in July." You wonder why the highway department didn't fine tune the warning to read "Bridge May Be Icy in Cold Weather." I wonder whether the warning becomes so familiar to the frequent commuter that it is unheeded at times when the bridge is icy. We know that bridges are the first to freeze in cold weather. The Word of God warns the Christian to be alert and watchful for there is an enemy of his or her soul. We have opposition from three: the world, the flesh and the devil. Many times we become needlessly snared because we ignore the warnings. The warnings become so familiar that they fall on deaf ears. Dangerous drifting is the besetting sin of our day. It is not so much intentional as from unconcern. Christians neglect their anchor—Christ—and begin to quietly drift away. There is no friction, no dramatic sense of departure. Temptations will surely come as cold weather comes to Pennsylvania and New York in January. We must always be alert or we will slide off the king's highway on those icy bridges of temptation. The Bible says, "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." (1 Peter 5:8) Run to Jesus!
