Aim: To be buffeted by God's law—even as we are saved in God's mercy.
Doctrine: Our failure to keep the law makes the true church merciful toward other sinners. The law thoroughly condemns us before a holy God; God's mercy completely releases us in the grace of Christ.
Exegesis: The Christian life as tension between law and mercy: our spiritual ''feet'' are ''held to the fire'' by our good fear of God (vv. 8-9); our self-righteous pride is crushed under the load of the law's demands (vv. 10-11); our obedience and hope is all based in Christ's gospel of free grace (vv. 12-13).
Further application: How the church thrives even from within the law and mercy continuum: holy fear of God retards sin in us, but it is grateful love that makes Jesus most dear to us.
Key verse: v. 13 ''For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.''
