Aim: To be fair and just as Christ's church—setting the standard for the whole world.
Doctrine: As the church we must fight against our flesh's tendency toward favortism. This usually manifests itself in perceived gain (from those with much), at the expense of those believers with little.
Exegesis: The godless evil of partiality in church: it despises the humble (and exalted) Christ who saved us (v. 1); it exposes us as no different than the unbelieving world (vv. 2-4); it shocks us back into our spiritual senses (vv. 5-7).
Further application: Why no partiality in church is an absolute requirement of God: because bias goes counter to the core of the gospel itself by judging people on the basis of outward appearance.
Key verse: v. 1 ''My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality.''
