To summarize what the Bible says about these relationships is very easy: Husbands love, wives submit, children obey.
Living it out is much more difficult. I started to say, fleshing it out is much more difficult, but the last thing we want to do is attempt to live out marriage roles in the flesh. It is essential that we Spirit it out, not flesh it out!
In Ephesians 5:22 (wives submit), in the Greek the word submit is missing. It must be supplied from the previous verse (5:21), which in turn is the direct result of being filled with the Spirit (5:18).
So, in Ephesians 5, before Paul launched into God’s roles for men and women within marriage, he first wrote about the importance of being filled with the Spirit. Without the Spirit’s direction, husbands love, wives submit and children obey is much less likely to occur.
