The narrative is about the Risen Lord Jesus’ acts in history. It tells the story of His acts and does not just portray a record of events that simply happened. Christ has risen and has been exalted. He sent the promised Holy Spirit and told His disciples that they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth (1:8). This chapter unfolds that point. I. We learn Five Truths about Conversion/Salvation 1. Jesus directs each conversion. 2. Our Lord uses the ordinary means of grace to convert. 3. Each conversion is a supernatural event. 4. Every conversion must deal with Jesus Christ (v. 35). 5. Every conversion shows a noticeable effect. II. Three Questions Answered 1. Which Pattern? 2. Visions, Dreams What about those Muslims who have dreams and visions of Jesus? Can’t we say that though that may be the ordinary means that God continues to convert through dreams, visions, etc.? What are we to make of those events? 3. Never heard the gospel III. Some Applications Made 1. If the Lord pursues sinners (like the Ethiopian) then pray and pray to the Lord who converts them. Some won’t pray for others because they don’t want to admit the person is not a believer! 2. Ask yourself what effect the gospel has had on you? Is it noticeable? Does it produce any joy? Have you ever known joy in the Lord? 3. Open your mouth! “Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus.” (v. 35) Apparently Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary.” Well — words are always necessary! 4. Read the Bible if you are not saved. Ask Him to open it up to you.
