In this sermon, we will look at the doctrine of assurance in its foundational teaching. What is assurance? It is one thing to be saved. It is another thing to know that we are saved and have assurance. We will look at assurance in 3 ways:
1. Historically What have people believed about assurance in the past? In the early church, the doctrine of assurance was present. However, few Christians had assurance. In fact, the Catholic church taught that if you say that you had assurance without being told by the church that you were, you were a heretic.
2. Biblically What does the Bible teach about assurance? 2 Peter 1:10, 1 John 5:13, and Matthew 7:21 all show that assurance for believers is obtainable and biblical.
3. Experientially What should the believer's experience be? - the believer should believe that assurance is grounded on the work of Christ for us - the supplementary help to the assurance the work of the Spirit in us - another supplementary help is the witness of the Spirit to us
