When reading verses 9 through 12 of Romans 8, 6 matters can be seen that arise from this text.
1. The peril that is indicated The peril indicated is death. This is not referring to the putting to death of the flesh or physical death. Paul is referring to eternal death here. If we live in the flesh, we will receive eternal separation and torment from God in hell with the devil and his angels.
2. The promise that is offered However, there is a promise and it is life. If we put the deeds of the flesh to death, we will live.
3. Two problems that are implied - Does this text teach eternal salvation by works? The answer is no. Paul is emphasizing the reality of true saving faith. - Is there a contradiction between the phrases "no condemnation" and "ye shall die"? The answer is no. Those who know no condemnation do not live after the flesh.
4. Two principles that are assumed - true believers do not live after the flesh - all who profess faith in the visible church might not possess faith
5. The practice that is encouraged The practice is putting to death the deeds of the body. We must go to extreme measures in order to stop feeding our sin.
6. The power that is required In order to mortify the deeds of the flesh, we need the power of the Spirit. We in ourselves are nothing. But with the Spirit, we can win the battle against our flesh.
