As we come this morning in chapter two to verse seventeen, Paul is continuing the imaginary conversation that he began back in chapter two and verse one. It’s an argument with a hypothetical first century Jew who is listening to Paul preach against reprobates in chapter one and is cheering him on because this guy, is himself, spiritually safe (he would think). So Paul wants to show this guy that God will judge all men and women, Gentile and Jew by the very same standard and the standard is how their deeds stack up against God’s just and holy expectations. Here is the theme of Paul’s argument this morning: the true people of God are identified by what's on the inside, not what’s on the outside. By God’s operation in their heart before we ever think about their hands. So we want to outline the text lke this: How Judaism demonstrates two forms of false spiritual security: 1. Confidence in the truth. The Jews boasted in the Law, but failed to obey it. 2. Confidence in your spiritual heritage. The Jews were marked by circumcision, but failed to honor it.
