In this week's passage, Acts 27:39-28:6, as their time in the storm came to an end, we see the fulfillment of the prophesies to Paul. The ship was run aground and all the lives were saved. As the sailors did all that they could to avoid running it aground, God still ran the ship aground. As the soldiers did what they could to cause lives to be lost, God used Julius, the centurion, to intervene to prevent the killing of the prisoners by commanding all who could swim to jump over board and swim to shore. When they arrived on land, rather than taking advantage of them, the natives showed unusual kindness and prepared a fire to warm them. We see that they believed in a gods that judged the affairs of men, because when Paul gets bitten by a venomous snake, they assumed that he must be a murderer. When he didn't suddenly fall down dead, they presumed he was a god We live in a society (including within the professing church) that does not believe God judges with righteous judgment which causes people to be cruel to each other and to mistreat one another. It causes sin to run unconstrained because of presuming upon the grace of God, instead of having the Biblical understanding that the grace of God enables us to walk in righteousness and constrains our sin. It is a sad state of the church when the pagans' belief in gods that judge produces more kindness and care for others than is frequently produced by people who claim to be Christians. We are to remember the resurrection, because there is a day when Jesus Christ will judge the living and the dead.
