As we consider the sixth command, you shall not murder, we need to consider the fullness of the commandment and not just the most egregious example or we will be like the rich young man that said that he kept all of the commandments. Just as the fifth commandment includes the duty to honor all those to whom honor is due, the sixth commandment includes putting people to death for murder, but not letting their body hang on the tree into the night because that is . It includes not being angry with someone. Not destroying someone's legacy. Not destroying their gender. And we know from Jesus, that it includes not being angry with someone unrighteously. With most of the other commandments, it is straight forward to know if we broke the most obvious case of it, but with this commandment a dead body is not necessarily a breaking of the commandment. If it was done in war, if it was done in self defense, if it was done as an avenger of blood, there are many exceptions where killing someone is not murder, but murder is still supposed to be considered very seriously by the civil magistrate. It is serious enough that something that looks like an accident, is still to be treated as a possible murder. The biblical law is that they are to be considered guilty if they hated the person in time past. God's law puts good constraints on the behavior of sinful men. It is the means for a peaceful society made up of sinful men and women.
