As we consider "You shall not commit adultery," it is important to remember that adultery is just the worst manifestation of this sin. Adultery is the worst form because it is about breaking covenant with someone else and is frequently used in scripture as a picture of breaking covenant with God. When a wife commits adultery, the anger and wrath that her husband would have under the circumstances is a picture of the anger and wrath that God has toward those who claim to be His, but chase after other gods. We should recognize that the category of sin that is expressed as not committing adultery is about not having self control and all of the sins of lacking self control, such as drunkenness and gluttony would fall into this category as well. When we cannot control our love for the world and the things in the world, we are committing adultery against God.
