We now consider, as Paul says, the first commandment with a promise. If as a people, we show honor to our fathers and mothers, our days will be long upon the land. When we think of any of the commandments, we should see the commandment as expressed in the ten commandments as not just restricting the worst manifestation of it, but also the infractions that are not quite as bad. The worst manifestation of dishonor is dishonoring your parents, but it extends beyond there. When we do not give honor to whom honor is due, society begins to collapse and our days are numbered in the land. This is important for us to understand as we are in a culture that has rejected that we are to honor those who are in authority. It shows up in many homes with single mothers that are terrorized by their teenage sons, but it is a bigger problem than that. We hold that rebellion is frequently good which is why we had riots for months last summer. We are a nation that is under judgment by God, because we don't like having authority over us. We need to make certain that we are part of the solution and not part of the problem.
