Is It Too Late for America? Psalm 80:14-19 The Psalms of Asaph are the twelve psalms numbered as 50 and 73–83 in the Masoretic Text, and as 49 and 72–82 in the Septuagint. It appears to have been written after the deportation of the Northern Tribes to Assyria, and by a poet of the Southern Kingdom, either before or during the Babylonian exile. The Asaphites, a name commonly used to identify temple singers. Another possibility is that the psalms were performed in the style or tradition of the guild bearing Asaph's name. Asaph is said to either be the author or the transcriber of these psalms. He may not have said these psalms but transcribed the words of David. The psalms are acts of relating to God. In the intense language of poetry, they address God with frankness and urgency. They give voice to our inner turmoil. They teach us to talk to God about life's deepest needs and longings with childlike vulnerability. And now, from prosperity, through adversity the Psalmist looks for recovery vv14-19. He who thrice asks for God to turn Israel vv3, 7, 19, here asks Him to turn Himself v.14. By the Lord's return we are turned, and when we turn the Lord returns. These are the two sides of one truth. God will come forward when we acknowledge that we have gone back v18. There is no forth-shining v1 where there is back-sliding. Throughout this song, Asaph asks God to restore His people vv2, 7, 19. The word "restore" means to refresh, repair, to bring back into good condition; to enable one to come back, to return. This is who our God is. He is a God who continually seeks the welfare of His people. Every year, America is slipping down and falling further into sin and gradualism.
