After preaching through Hebrews 4 and before we leave the 4th commandment, it seems worthwhile to consider the communal nature of the commandment and how that applies today. Most of the words spoken by God in giving the commandment about the Sabbath are related to the communal nature and not just how it applies to the individual. What does it look like to not have your sons and daughters work and rest? What does it look like in our day and age not to have our male servants and our female servants work? We don't use cattle for labor, but God even commanded that they be given the day of rest. How should we work to cause the stranger who is within our gates to rest? The church used to be very successful at doing these things. There used to be laws to enforce them. Now most people who go to church don't think that they should keep a day of rest and because of that, we testify that God is like Pharaoh and not the merciful God who He is.
