Assurance of our union with Christ. When we talk about our experiences, we are talking about our interpretation of an event. There could be any number of factors that affect what we believe we experienced. The key phrase we are considering is "by this we know." Anyone can make a truth claim. We live in a time when 73% of Americans claim to be Christians. And we live in a culture that tells us "we can be whatever we want." If I claim to be a Christian, how do I know objectively that such a claim is true? We look at a standard, a measuring line, and we see if we measure up. We test our truth claims. Our experiences are not the measuring stick. Jeremiah 17:9 confirms this. It says "the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick: who can understand it? God only speaks through His word. The mind is an amazing instrument. But it can interpret events wrongly. We can know that we are in a state of union with Christ. This is the most basic explanation of what our relationship to Jesus is. When the Bible writers wanted to speak of people who are trusting in Jesus as their savior, they didn't use the word Christian. The biblical phrase is "in Him" or "in Christ". It is used over 100 times. It is the key phrase that describes how we relate to Jesus.
