We are going to consider the first letter of Apostle John. Eight times in this letter John says "by this we know." We live in a post-modern world and in a post-Christian culture with a post-truth view of reality. But you also see this through our morality. Right and wrong is determined by emotional trauma. In a post-truth world, emotionalism governs, not objective truth. There are a lot of negative side effects. But one of the greatest consequences of living by emotion is the loss of intimacy. If emotions govern truth, then that which shapes our emotions shape what we think we know to be true. Therefore, the Bible can't be true because the Bible says I'm a sinner, a liar, an adulterer, a murderer, and a blasphemer, an idolater and a gossiper. Holding up a mirror that makes me look so utterly terrible, does nothing for my self esteem. So I have to shatter that mirror and find another one. |
