Aim: To see the gospel message clearly prefigured for us in the events of Joshua's life.
Exegesis: Sin brings forth shame. Sinners try to (v. 16), but cannot (v. 17), hide from God. Sin brings forth punishment. Sinners are imprisoned (v. 18), harassed (v. 19), and killed (vv. 20-21) by iniquity. Our sin necessitated Christ's resurrection. Jesus triumphed over our death (v. 22) and enemies (vv. 23-25). Our sin necessitated Christ's crucifixion. The cross puts away the curse (v. 26) and wrath (v. 27) of God that was against us.
Key verse: v. 26 ''And afterward Joshua struck them and killed them, and hanged them on five trees; and they were hanging on the trees until evening.''
