The Spirit & Power of Elijah - Message 6 - Scoundrels! If we think debates about imminent domain laws are something new then we have forgotten the words of Solomon, "There is nothing new under the sun." Just as there are legal battles today in our nation over the right of the government to claim land for its own uses regardless of who owns the property, so wicked King Ahab had an idea that he wanted land that was not his. Naboth owned a vineyard next door to Ahab's palace. Ahab proposed to Naboth a plan, wherein he would give his family home and land to the king to use for a garden in exchange for being given a better vineyard, or a good sum of money. Naboth refused to leave the land he had inherited from his fathers and so Ahab threw a hissy fit. As Ahab sulked Jezebel plotted. She hatched a plan, paid off two scoundrels, and set Naboth up to be murdered. As soon as the plan was carried out, Ahab took possession of Naboth's vineyard for himself. Then the Word of the Lord came to Elijah. He took a message of Divine retribution to Ahab and Jezebel. They would not get away with this wickedness. In fact, this covetous, conniving behavior was going to cost Ahab his posterity. Naboth had inherited his land from his fathers. Ahab would not have anyone left to inherit anything of his. Ahab reacted with grief, repentance, fasting, and mourning. God responded with grace and did not immediately fulfill the prophesied judgment. What lessons can we learn from this incident and Ahab's response to the Word of the Lord? Be there Sunday to find out as we study the Word of the Lord together and worship Him in spirit and truth.
