The Spirit & Power of Elijah - Message 5 - Zealous for the Lord. After the victory on Mt. Carmel and the execution of the false prophets of Baal, the drought ended and rain fell for the first time in three and a half years. Ahab's immediate response was not one of gratitude to God, relief at the end of the drought and famine, or a return to faith in the God of Israel. His first response was to run and tell Jezebel what Elijah had done in killing the prophets of Baal. Jezebel's response was to send a message to Elijah. She swore she was going to kill him! He was a man "of like passions" as we are, and he ran for his life. While running he encounters and angel and then hides in a cave, fearing that while he is zealous for the Lord he is all alone, the only prophet who fears God that is left in the land. Never mind the 100 prophets Obadiah is hiding. Never mind all the people who had just been turned back to God. Fear of this wicked woman drove Elijah into self pity and despair. Thankfully God did not leave Him there but revealed Himself to Elijah in a still small voice, calling him back to his mission and the task at hand, as he was to continue to defame Baal in the land and promote the worship of the One True and Living God. How often do we allow fear, self pity, and despair to drive us away from the Lord and into a cave to hide? How often do we think we are zealous for the Lord when in truth we are zealous for looking out for number one? And what can we learn about God from a man "of like passions" as he went from victory to defeat in a moment?
